How to choose a green coconut?
Coconut rocks, coconut cocktail, coconut flan... This exotic fruit lends itself to all sweet, and even sweet-salty preparations. Are you one of the biggest fans of coconut? To save money and enjoy it fresh, you can also choose to buy it whole, and not just as grated coconut flesh or milk in a carton. However, not all coconuts are the same... Discover some tips to distinguish one coconut from another, at the top of its shape!
The general appearance of the coconut
What could be more similar than the fruits of the coconut tree, those brown and oval shells, dressed in thick fibres? At first glance, not much: coconuts all look the same! To choose your fruit without making a mistake, check it from every angle. No brownish spots on the horizon, no cracks? It's a good start: a priori, your fruit has not suffered any shock. Next, feel the nut: to the touch, no portion is soft? Perfect! Otherwise, unfortunately, some parts are rotten: try another fruit instead. Finally, take a look at your coconut... with your eyes in your eyes! More precisely; check that its eyes, those little dark spots at the base of the nut, are not invaded by mould. Does it look harmonious to you? The first test passed with flying colours! Now it's time to move on to the second stage of selection.
The weight and noise of the coconut
To check the quality of your tropical fruit, weigh it. The heavier the nut, the more water it contains, a sign of freshness. Next, shake the coconut to hear its song, or more precisely the delicate lapping of the coconut water that bounces off the sides of the coconut inside. The fruit is so juicy that its rustle reminds you of the ebb and flow of the seaside? Then it has every chance of being firm and tasty when you taste it! General appearance without defects, absence of cracks and mould, substantial weight and promising rattle... If your coconut has all these characteristics, neither one nor two: it's the right one! More than one objective in sight: open it quickly and prepare a delicious exotic coconut cocktail, just to complete your dream of a paradise island!
