Why does alcohol make you fat?

Dieticians are clear: to start losing weight, you have to stop drinking alcohol. Sugars, fats, and alcohol are therefore linked, but how? Why does alcohol make you fat?

Alcoholic beverages are high in empty calories. Cocktails are particularly high in sugar and disastrous for blood sugar, but excess insulin in the blood can lead to adverse health consequences, including weight gain or diabetes. Without changing your diet, but simply by removing alcohol, weight loss is often at the appointment.

Why does alcohol make you fat?

Some benchmarks for a better lifestyle

How much and how often can you drink alcohol, so you don't gain too much weight?

If you are overweight, it is best to stop drinking altogether. This will allow your body to burn calories more efficiently than it does in the presence of alcohol. On the other hand, alcohol dehydrates the body and the body then tends to retain water to compensate.

Without alcohol, you will eat less, because your appetite will be better regulated. Finally, by eliminating the "aperitif" moment, you will avoid fatty and salty biscuits. If you are forced to do so by an invitation, opt for a vegetable juice, for example (tomatoes, carrots, etc.) and raw vegetables to chew. And, do not forget to practice a regular sports activity.

Is alcohol bad for your health?

Drinking a glass of alcohol from time to time is not bad for your health, as long as it is in moderation.

Indeed, once ingested, the body in general and the liver, in particular, will work to eliminate alcohol. A series of chemical reactions will take place so that alcohol is transformed into various substances that will feed the manufacture of fatty acids. On the other hand, fat burning is slowed down.

The feeling of satiety disappears

Alcohol consumption affects appetite. When you drink, the body loses some bearings. Among them, satiety. In other words, we eat more, if not much more, when we drink. Alcohol opens the appetite. We feel it, especially during an aperitif: despite the calories of the drink, we can ingest large quantities of salty cakes and chips of all kinds.

Similarly, during a meal, drinking an alcoholic beverage allows the body to eat much more than we would if we only drank water. The hypothalamus, the gland in the brain that regulates hormones and acts on the regulation of appetite, is disrupted by the presence of alcohol. "It's very difficult to stop eating when you've started drinking," says Professor Seeley, an American psychiatrist.

Alcohol in figures

According to the WHO (World Health Organization), a reasonable consumption corresponds to a maximum of fourteen glasses of alcoholic beverages per week for women (two drinks a day) and twenty-one for men, which is equivalent to three drinks a day. To lose weight quickly, remove them completely!

On the calorie side, a glass of red wine is equivalent to an intake of 100 kcal. A glass of champagne brings 120 kcal. Same intake for a dose of rum of 2.5 cl. A 15 cl glass of Vodka/coca leads to an intake of 122 kcal. A 25 cl bottle of lager brings 140 kcal. The record is held by whisky, a glass has 380 kcal.
