How to furnish an apartment or a house or a villa?

November 19, 2022 0 Comments

The market for holiday homes and small non-hotel accommodation facilities offered for short periods to tourists and travelers has been booming in recent years. France is the second largest market in the world with over one million properties rented.

The Airbnb offer

Thanks to portals such as Airbnb, it is now very easy to rent properties that would otherwise sit unused or, more often than not, abandoned for much of the year. In France, there are many families who, thanks to this intelligent resource-sharing system, manage to make ends meet by creating an alternative source of income.

To obtain satisfactory results, it is not only necessary to have a suitable structure, but it is also essential to make it welcoming and suitable for people who will usually spend only a few days there. If you are also planning to enter the world of short-term rentals, know that, especially in areas with a high tourist flow, this type of market is very competitive and that, therefore, you will have to work hard to make your offer particularly attractive and able to immediately attract the attention of the potential customer.

Our tips to make your home more interesting

You don't need to spend a lot of money, in fact, don't overspend, this is a tip to keep in mind when furnishing an Airbnb home. The low investment is justified by the fact that the space will not be inhabited directly by you, but by many people passing through, and therefore it will be subject to considerable wear and tear. It is useless to spend large sums on expensive furniture, it is better to focus on functional, inexpensive, and resistant furniture.

Keep in mind that the goal you need to achieve is guest satisfaction: everything must be done for this purpose, and very little is needed to achieve it.

1. Keep the necessary space

A good suggestion would be not to fill the house with unnecessary items and leave the necessary space at the entrance and in the hallway to facilitate the passage of suitcases.

2. Think about the office

Setting up a corner of the house into an office with: a small desk, a computer, and a printer will be an interesting idea, especially for business travelers.

3. Renovate your walls

'Giving walls a coat of colour' costs little time and money, but gives character and liveliness to the home, making it less anonymous. Never forget that people looking for a place to stay on Airbnb or similar portals want a less cold and sanitized travel experience than a hotel room, and therefore expect a warm home environment.

4. The main rooms

The rooms most used during the holidays are the bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen, in which the essential equipment should never be lacking: there is no point in offering a beautiful apartment, perfectly furnished, and then forgetting to leave plates, glasses, cutlery or towels, and toilet paper.

It's the small details that make the difference and neglecting them can immediately give a bad impression. Finally, pay close attention to the photos you are going to publish: too often, because of sloppy shots, all the good work, and energy spent on decorating the house is wasted (better to make a small investment and enjoy the experience of a professional interior photographer).

After these general tips, let's go into the details of the subject and see how to act to make a home, a functional and welcoming home for any host looking for his apartment, or his house, on Airbnb.

Choose a style

  • Personalize and make your rooms pleasant
  • Making the house a unique experience
  • Keep your home clean
  • Give your home the right lighting
  • Decorate your home with timeless furniture
  • Entrance is the first business card
  • A comfortable bed
  • The kitchen must be super-equipped
  • A clean and fresh bathroom
  • Pamper your guests

What can't be missing in an Airbnb home?

Choose a style

Everyone has their own tastes when it comes to decoration but, in this case, you need to find the right balance between aesthetics and functionality. The environment you set up will have to accommodate people who may also be from other countries, so try to create it by putting yourself in the shoes of a traveler and his needs: your home must be able, as much as possible, to adapt to everyone.

The watchword is the minimum, that is to say, an essential furnishing with the bare necessities to make the living room, comfortable; Therefore, first of all, try to eliminate unnecessary items and trinkets that only serve to accumulate dust. Of course, you can also opt for more personal styles like, for example, the Provençal, which is always popular, or the particular shabby chic, so-called by interior designers.

Another aspect that you should not forget is the location of the house. It is clear that the style must find a balance with the location, therefore, it will have to adapt to different situations and it will be different if the structure is located in the center of a city of art, in a tourist area by the sea, immersed in the countryside, in a typical mountain village or in a ski resort.

The important thing in choosing a style, whether modern or vintage, is to always try to maintain a certain harmony to make the home welcoming and with everything you need at your fingertips.

Personalize and make your rooms pleasant

The house must attract the guest and convince them to book despite the dozens of other offers they may find in your area. Looking at the photos, he must perceive all the details that make the house welcoming but at the same time original.

The tourist who chooses to stay on Airbnb is not only looking for comfort, but wants to live a unique and unforgettable experience. For the house to tell a story, you can use furnishing details like, a library with old manuscripts or typical and old objects related to the area. Avoid placing personal photographs and images of a political or religious nature that could upset or irritate people sensitive to these subjects: it is better to have a beautiful landscape or a reproduction of a work of art.

Make your home a unique experience

The guest expects a cozy and warm atmosphere and you can try to impress him with a whole series of additional comforts. It is certain that having a house with a swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi generates added value that would make the proposal much more attractive. Similarly, offering a breakfast location with stunning sea views, romantic lake views or the impressive view of towering mountains would be an additional arrow to your bow.

However, it is not necessary to own facilities in dream locations or make expensive investments to provide an unforgettable stay. It is often the small details and unexpected services that leave the visitor speechless. For example, finding some technological gadgets in the house such as voice assistants (Google Home or Amazon Alexa), a video game console to entertain young and old, Bluetooth speakers to stream music in every room, and a modern TV system with a set-top box and subscription will surely be appreciated.

If there are bike paths and areas nearby that can be visited comfortably by bike, it's not a bad idea at all to provide a few mountain or city bikes. As you can see, the possibilities are countless and it takes very little for your offer to be winning and, above all, unique and different from the average, managing to offer a unique stay and enjoying the advantages of a structure.

Always keep your home clean
One aspect that you should absolutely not neglect is the cleanliness of your accommodation. If you plan to rent your apartment successfully, allow a good amount of time, or money, to keep your home environment clean and sanitized at all times. In addition to the normal tasks you will have to perform upon departure to prepare the house to welcome the following visitors, there are other essential services.

Waste collection is an aspect that should not be underestimated. You will need to provide the customer with all the necessary information to properly dispose of the waste. Especially if the tenant has booked for a long vacation, he will need to know where to place the waste and, above all, the exact times and days of collection. Especially if the visitors are foreigners, it is important to clearly indicate what to do.

The laundry service to ensure clean sheets and towels at all times is another task that must be done regularly. All of this takes time and dedication to fully satisfy customer needs. If you encounter difficulties, simply ask for the help of an employee who will take care of it for you.

Give your home the right lighting
To successfully rent an apartment or detached house, you can not do without proper lighting in each room. This is a rule that still applies, but even more so if the available spaces are rather limited. In order to give depth and a feeling of space, it is necessary to make the best use of external and artificial light. Avoid painting walls too dark and choose light colors for furniture too (you can never go wrong with white), this will allow you to get a brighter interior that reflects natural light.

If necessary, use lamps to put on tables, furniture, or directly on the floor; You will be able to easily illuminate the corners of the house that are constantly in the dark by also highlighting the details of the furnishings. If you haven't already, replace all bulbs with eco-friendly and energy-efficient models. LED technology is the best solution that allows you to have both warm lights for the night and cold light for the day and bathrooms while reducing operating costs and guaranteeing a very long service life.

Furnish your home with timeless furniture

As we have already stressed several times, the furnishing of an Airbnb home must offer the right compromise between aesthetic appearance and functionality. A factor that becomes even more decisive if the available space is rather limited. In these cases, it is necessary to use every available centimeter, even with 2-in-1 furnishing accessories. A classic example is a bed with large drawers that can be used to store a large number of objects in an orderly manner.

In small apartments, try to reduce as much as possible the effect of claustrophobia that can manifest itself in the guest. The best is to choose furniture with light tones and very simple and sinuous lines that give an impression of lightness and greater depth to the room.

Entrance is the first business card

The entrance area represents the business card of the whole house and must surprise the visitor without making him regret, immediately, his decision. Choose furniture that retains certain usefulness, but, at the same time, is original and able to convey your good taste.

Details always make the difference and the lobby should never lack a lamp that perfectly illuminates the area, an easy-to-access switch, and a pot containing a few umbrellas to use in case of rain (tourists are unlikely to take an umbrella on vacation).

Inside, there must be enough space to move around with suitcases, a coat rack and a piece of furniture, or shelves, to put everyday objects such as keys, small bags, smartphones, etc.

A comfortable bed

The bedroom, like the other rooms, should be beautiful and welcoming, but what guests don't compromise on is the comfort of the bed. It is, of course, a pleasure to open the door and find yourself in front of a neat décor and a clean and fragrant room, but if you wake up in the morning with back pain or unbearable neck pain, these will probably be the only things you will remember.

The elements that make the difference are the mattress and pillows. The choice of advanced materials such as latex or polyurethane foam (the famous memory foam).

Bed linen

The fabric of the mattress cover and sheets is also important, the best solution being cotton, which is fresh, hygienic, and non-allergenic for people with sensitive skin. For blankets, it is enough to respect the seasons.

One thing that guests, particularly appreciate is the ability to choose a pillow from several models and different shapes... This can be a great idea to surprise even the most demanding guests!
reading in bed and perfectly illuminate the entire room. Place the switches at hand and use lamps with dimmer lights, possibly with a remote control: with a little extra expense, you will offer your guests maximum comfort.

Lighting

Great attention should also be paid to lighting. First, apply double curtains to each window, so that you have a light layer to let daylight filter in while ensuring sufficient privacy, and a heavier curtain to ensure total darkness at night and promote rest.

Carefully choose the lamps according to the areas of the room. The arrangement and intensity of the light should allow
Temperature

An adequate temperature is necessary for satisfactory rest. We are almost in 2023 and it is strictly necessary to equip the room with an air conditioning system to maintain a constant temperature between 20 ° C and 23 ° C in all seasons. Air conditioning, like Wi-Fi, as we will see later, is no longer an optional option but the fundamental element that should NEVER be lacking.

Brochures
The last suggestion is to leave in the room all the useful information for the tourist for his stay: I refer to excursion brochures, guides to tourist attractions in the area, or phone numbers to order a pizza or book dinner in a recommended restaurant.

It is very appreciated, but especially useful to provide guests with a list of telephone numbers and addresses needed in case of emergency: firefighters, hospitals, medical services, pharmacies, police offices, etc.

Kitchen must be super-equipped

Those who book a stay in a holiday home may decide to eat out every day, but many choose instead to get their hands dirty and use the kitchen to prepare typical recipes with fresh local ingredients. In order not to leave anything to chance, the kitchenette must be equipped with all the necessary accessories for the preparation of a lunch or dinner. The higher the quality of the equipment provided, the higher the customer satisfaction.

What should never be missed is a microwave oven that allows not only cooking but also heating water and prepared dishes in a short time. Of course, the refrigerator will have to be of the type combined with a freezer as well. A toaster, coffee maker or, better yet, a waffle machine, become popular tools for breakfasts. Good cookware, various utensils, cutlery, glasses and assorted plates complete the accessories that should not be missing in the kitchen.

If you want to be a particularly scrupulous host, also leave a basket containing fresh fruit and basic necessities like, for example, a packet of pasta, tomato puree, cookies, rusks, oil, vinegar, salt, sugar, tea and at least a dozen pods or coffee capsules. Those who arrive at their destination tired from the trip will find great comfort in having something to eat or the opportunity to prepare a simple pasta dish without having to leave their home.

A clean and fresh bathroom

The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the house, but above all, it is decisive for the total satisfaction of customers.

The basic rule is maximum cleanliness, with sanitary items that must shine and soft towels. Even though many tourists bring from home everything they need for their personal hygiene:

  • some new, unopened toothbrushes,
  • toothpaste,
  • shampoo,
  • shower gel,
  • a scented lotion,
  • etc...
In addition to the level of hygiene, it is fundamental to highlight spaces, whether small or large. The choice of furniture is a determining factor and will bring a touch of originality. The urban chic style combines classic shapes with modern finishes and can satisfy the most diverse tastes. If you want something less showy, you can opt for freestanding furniture that offers the feeling of a more discreet and reassuring atmosphere.

Pamper your guests

There are many little tricks to show your visitors that you are happy to have them as guests. A personalized welcome card, a bottle of wine, bouquets of fresh flowers in the rooms, and sweets and chocolates scattered throughout the apartment are just a few examples of how to pamper guests and make them feel special.

Want to go even further?
You can then decide to arrange corners of the house into relaxation areas, placing small tables and armchairs where they can read a book, sip a cup of tea or listen to good music in peace. On vacation, everyone tries to unplug and leave behind, at least for a few days, the stressful daily routine: even a small space where you can close your eyes and meditate will be much appreciated.

If you have a family-friendly facility, consider whether young children may be present. A special area for the care and cleaning of babies will be welcome. Likewise, a basket full of toys, the availability of accessories such as high chairs, crib, deckchair and kettle for baby food will be appreciated.

All these details are essential to success and demonstrate your great desire to share and welcome people into your home, considering them more than just tourists.

How do you know if your septic tank needs to be emptied?

November 19, 2022 0 Comments

To avoid pollution of soils, waterways, and groundwater by wastewater, septic tanks are used. This sanitation system makes it possible to collect black water, which comes mainly from toilets. However, it is essential to maintain it well in order to keep your home healthy and hygienic. Discover here the essentials of what you need to know before emptying your septic tank.

When should the septic tank be emptied?

It is estimated that a septic tank should be emptied every 4 to 5 years taking into account the volume and number of people in the household. If the pit is of small capacity, it must be emptied on average every 2 years. In order to be sure to benefit from optimal maintenance, it is advisable, for a septic tank emptying, to call on a specialized company. The services it offers take into account the emptying of all types of pits, sanitation and unclogging of pipes.

In a house occupied by 6 people, the pit must be emptied within an interval of 30-40 months. On the other hand, for a house in which 2 or 3 people live, we can wait about 8 years before emptying the pit.

What are the signs that the septic tank is full?

When bad odors start coming out of shower pipes, toilets or sinks, don't neglect these signs. The obstruction of your drains that manifests itself by the difficulties of flow is likely a sign of a full pit. When you notice areas of moisture where the water begins to stagnate above the filter bed, you can call your emptying service.

Before, you can perform a stick test to be really sure of the need to drain your septic tank. Dip a stick into the tank to check the height reached by the sludge. If this reaches 50% of the total volume of the tank, then it must be emptied. Another way of checking is to push the stick as much as possible into the manhole of the septic tank. When there is resistance to a shallow depth, it is because the level of the mud is reached and the pit must be emptied. If the sludge level exceeds 50% of the tank level, the pit is full and must be emptied as soon as possible. Note that plugs can form downstream of the pit and cause it to overflow when it is not yet full. The only solution, in this case, is to empty the pit in order to be able to unclog it.

Why regularly empty your septic tank?

A pit that is not drained regularly or that is filled with sewage can cause significant damage. With such a pit, the risk of having drainage problems is quite high. When the amount of solid contents in the pit reaches 8% of its entire volume, this leads to a bacteriological imbalance.

Pits that lack maintenance can become a source of very unpleasant olfactory pollution and make your living environment unhealthy. Indeed, the accumulation of black water, domestic water and kitchen water that it collects generates bacteria that are harmful to your health. Under these conditions, the risk of developing an infectious disease becomes high.

What to do when the septic tank is clogged?

When domestic pipes such as toilets or kitchens become clogged due to accumulations of material, locating the plug is difficult. On the other hand, for a septic tank, this is easy to locate and simple to unblock.

Start by diagnosing your pit to determine the origin of the blockage. Once the clogged part is uncovered, call a professional to help you unclog it. In the future, avoid throwing or introducing waste other than human waste and toilet paper into the pit.

How much does it cost to empty a septic tank?

A classic emptying of your septic tank will cost you an average of 240 euros. For this amount, you can drain a 3 m³ pit. This also includes cleaning the pit and inspecting it using a specific camera. The same rate also takes into account the pumping of the grease trap and the cleaning of the pit. If the capacity of the pit exceeds 3 m³, plan 150 euros more for 1 m³ extra.

Similarly, premium services are available with an initial price of about 550 euros for 3 m³. They take into account the cleaning of the pit, its cleaning, its inspection with a pit camera, and the pumping of the grease trap. For an additional 1 m³, you need to complete with 100 euros on average. These rates are not fixed. They can change depending on the specifics of your septic tank.

It is in Fukui Prefecture, in Wakasa Bay more precisely, where the sublime beach of Suishohama is located. A dream beach where you can swim in translucent water, as its name comes from the Japanese "suicho" which means "crystal".

Suishohama beach has another particularity: it's sand. It is said of him that he would be "singing. In summer, we practice all kinds of water activities and we stay there until nightfall to have the privilege of admiring the Milky Way above our heads.

Hirizo Beach

About 200km south of Tokyo is Hirizo Beach, located on the Izu Peninsula. This incredible little piece of paradise, nestled at the foot of the cliffs, is only accessible by boat.

If there's one place where you'll need to take out your mask and snorkel, it's here, since Hirizo Beach is located in the heart of a UNESCO Global Geopark. The clarity of the water makes it very easy to contemplate the seabed of this sumptuous place. This warm-water peninsula attracts much migratory fish as well as turtles, anemones, and beautiful corals. A paradise beach is among the best preserved in Japan.

Chirihama Beach

Not all beautiful beaches necessarily rhyme with idleness! Located in Ishikawa Prefecture, Chirihama Beach has the distinction of being the only one in Japan where cars can drive. An experience of the most exotic since we are not used to attending such a show in France.

The fine sand of this beach, soaked in water, is a sufficiently compact surface to skirt the sea at full speed, regardless of your vehicle.

8km long and 50m wide, this unique beach has the air of a real highway. At the water's edge, you can still enjoy swimming, water skiing in summer, or tasting sazae or hamaguri, the local shellfish.

Yurigahama Beach

Yurigahama Beach is a short-lived beach in the Ryukyu Archipelago, Okinawa Prefecture. Here, the beaches are all prettier than the others, worthy of the most beautiful postcards. Yurigahama Beach, with its crystal clear waters, is no exception.

This strip of sand is only revealed in spring and summer, at low tide, which further reinforces the idyllic and magical character of the place. At this time of year, the beach changes shape and size every day to the delight of its visitors. A truly spectacular place that will exceed all your expectations.

If you decide to go to Chirihama, try to be there for sunset, an appointment not to be missed!

Special mention for the Saki-no-غu, an outdoor Onsen (the oldest in Japan) overlooking the Pacific Ocean, located at the end of the beach on a rocky promontory.

Jodogahama Beach

Jodogahama Beach, which means paradise beach in Japanese, belongs to Sanriku Fukko National Park, located in Miyako, Iwate Prefecture.

Here, no sand, but white pebbles that contrast sharply with the blue of the ocean. Located on the island of Shikine, you will have to take a boat to reach this paradisiacal beach located 5 minutes' walk from the port. You will discover a beautiful cove where all the ingredients will be gathered to spend a great day: clear and shallow waters for the whole family to enjoy, a sandy beach, and water worthy of the Caribbean!

Amanohashidate Beach

If you are not far from Kyoto, you may have the opportunity to discover the beautiful beach of Amanohashidate. It is a sandbank more than 3km long, often compared to a natural bridge, which is home to thousands of Japanese pines. If this beach lends itself more to contemplation than idleness, it is nevertheless one of the most beautiful in the country. We recommend that you start the walk by admiring the "sky bridge" from Kasamatu Park to enjoy one of the most famous views of Japan. Then, take the time to walk on the beach to the Buddhist temple Chion-Ji, on the other side of the bay.

Furuzamami Beach

It is on the island of Zamami which is located on the beach of Furuzamami, a place, worthy of the American archipelago of Hawaii, which offers breathtaking landscapes to its visitors.

Once again, all the ingredients are gathered in this sumptuous place: warm water all year round that deteriorates into a subtle shade of blue, a beach of fine white sand, extraordinary seabed suitable for snorkeling and mysterious rocky islets covered with dense vegetation. A heavenly setting that attracts lovers of idleness as well as nature lovers.

How to avoid gaining weight in winter?

November 13, 2022 0 Comments

Every year, the same scenario repeats itself: you gain a few pounds in winter that you have trouble getting rid of before summer arrives. The ambient cold, the decrease in brightness, and the end-of-year celebrations are the main culprits. Follow the advice of Nathalie Négro, dietician, not to gain weight this winter.

Why do we get fat in winter?

Several factors come into play in winter weight gain:

Lack of motivation for physical activity

In spring and summer, mild temperatures and long hours of sunshine boost motivation for outdoor physical activities. But when winter arrives, the cold and the lack of light do not make you want to put your nose outside and even less to play sports. Only the most adventurous maintain their activity in summer and winter.

The cold

When it's cold, the body tends to expend more calories to keep body temperature at a normal level. Our unconscious pushes us to eat caloric foods to compensate, it's an old reflex. "Even if in reality, we no longer fight against the cold because we are most of the time in warmed places, we feel the need to eat more and go towards caloric foods," notes Nathalie Négro.

The end-of-year celebrations

They are often a trigger for winter weight gain. "During the holidays, we tend to eat fatty dishes and chocolates repeatedly. The portions are also more hearty on the plate. Some people keep these bad habits even after the holidays. However, the more you eat, the more the size of the stomach increases to a certain point. It's a vicious circle," says the dietician. (Discover 'Our tips for a tasty and light New Year's Eve).

Low morale

In autumn and winter, you can have your spirits in the socks because of the lack of light. Food, especially sweet or fatty foods, can then be seen as comfort.

Choosing the right physical activities at the start of the school year

There is no secret, to keep the line, you have to move all year round! Adept at running when the weather is nice, you give up as soon as the weather spoils? Know how to anticipate from the beginning of the school year. 'If you like to practice an outdoor activity but not in cold weather, it is better to choose an indoor activity as a complement to stay active throughout the year. And above all, we continue to do sports even during the end-of-year holidays, "advises the nutrition specialist.

Stationary bike, pilates, yoga (or mode yoga to stay warm), muscle strengthening exercises, jump rope, weight training... The choice is wide. Two to three one-hour sessions per week are recommended to maintain your line. Complete 20 to 30 minutes of walking per day, if possible. Take the opportunity to walk during the hours of sunshine, rarer in winter, to enjoy all the benefits of natural light.

Lighten your winter dishes

In winter, it is difficult to resist traditional gourmet dishes such as raclette, tartiflette, sauerkraut, or meat dishes in sauce. If consumed exceptionally, they should not have an impact on your weight. On the other hand, if they multiply, limit calories with a few tips:

  • For raclette, choose low-fat cold cuts such as Grisons meat, bresaola, bacon fillet, or white ham. Accompany your processed cheese with vegetables and not just potatoes. 'Fennel bulbs and carrots in sections go very well with raclette cheese. On the other hand, green salad is a false good idea because the oil contained in the vinaigrette only increases the amount of fat ingested. Finally, be reasonable about cheese slices. Rather than serving yourself constantly in a well-stocked dish placed in the middle of the table, take a maximum of ten slices at the beginning of the meal and stick to this amount.
  • For stewed meat dishes, use low-fat pieces "such as fondue pieces, beef collar, cheek or paleron", recommends Nathalie Négro.
  • For sauces based on fresh cream, add it at the end of cooking. Crème fraîche helps to give taste and creaminess to sauces, but it should not be integrated into recipes throughout cooking, at the risk of abusing it. "For a dish, it takes about a tablespoon of crème fraîche per person," says the dietician. As a binder, prefer guar gum to flour. Derived from a legume, it is found in powder form in organic stores. A small pinch is enough to thicken a sauce.

Make full meals

If you tend to have more appetite in winter, be sure to make full meals, that is, with a starter, a main course, and a dessert. "If you start the meal with soup or raw vegetables, it avoids serving large portions on the plate at the time of the dish because the starter will have stalled while bringing few calories," explains the specialist.
Be careful, the trap in winter is to consume too many starchy foods, especially by combining them in a single meal. "It is better not to put starchy foods in the main course if you have planned a dessert that contains them," adds the dietician.

Choosing satiating foods

Rather than throwing yourself on caloric but nutritionally uninteresting products, include quality satiating foods in your meals. "For example, cottage cheese is more satiating than yogurt because it contains more protein and less water. Prefer legumes to pasta and rice because they are richer in protein and fiber and maintain satiety better throughout the day.

Listening to your hunger

If you've eaten a hearty meal at lunch, chances are you'll be hungry for dinner. Eat your fill and not according to leftovers because this bad habit promotes weight gain. Do you still have the lunchtime raclette on your stomach? Opt for soup or raw vegetables for dinner. Leftover cheese and deli meats will not be lost since they can be kept cool for two to three days.

Learn more about the solar plexus (celiac)

November 06, 2022 0 Comments

Connected to digestive function, the solar plexus, or celiac, can be the seat of tension, or even localized pain. Where is the solar plexus? How to take care of it on a daily basis? The point with Youri Bertucchi, an osteopath in Toulouse.

The plexus: definition

Made up of a grouping of nerve fibers, plexuses, which in Latin mean 'interlacing' are, by definition, networks of nerves found in both the peripheral and autonomic nervous systems. "In anatomy, different plexuses participate in the formation of the nervous network that runs through the body from head to toe," says Youri Bertucchi, an osteopath in Toulouse. The sacral plexus forms the sciatic nerve for the legs. A little higher in the body, the lumbar plexus starts from the lower back to the thighs and knees. The celiac (or solar) plexus corresponds to the area between the navel and the sternum in the abdomen, it is in the center of the body. In the upper limbs, the brachial plexus corresponds to the meeting of the anterior branches of the last four cervical nerves and the first thoracic nerve, which corresponds to the shoulders, arms, forearms, and hands. Finally, the cervical plexus is connected to the shoulders, head, and neck.

The solar plexus, a network of nerves

The solar plexus is made up of several ganglia, nerves from the brain that pass mainly through the spine and are the starting point for the organs of the belly: the diaphragm (the muscle of respiration), the stomach, the liver, the small intestine. They then travel through the kidneys and even the gonads (ovaries and testicles). Each nerve includes interoceptors whose role is to transmit information, such as the feeling of satiety or bloating for example, to the viscera. The solar plexus includes several pairs of ganglia: celiac ganglia, sometimes called semi-lunar because of their shape suggestive of a crescent moon, and superior mesenteric and aortic renal ganglia. "This plexus is part of the autonomic nervous system, in its sympathetic subdivision. It intervenes in the function of digestion by sending information to all digestive organs, "adds the osteopath.

From an energetic point of view, the solar plexus is also intertwined, which allows the different flows of energy to flow and radiate throughout the body. In Hinduism, the solar plexus is one of the 7 chakras, located at the level of the sternum. Named simply in English 'solar plexus chakras' (its original name being Manipura), it is the third chakra starting from the Root chakra, and the center of energy and serenity.

Issues related to the solar plexus

The celiac plexus is an area particularly sensitive to stress. It is therefore not uncommon for disorders such as tension, a feeling of oppression, heaviness, or even pain related to stress to lodge in this area. "This is not a problem that will set up overnight. Rather, it reflects a situation of chronic stress, emotional problems that persist and that literally end up weighing on this area," explains Youri Bertucchi.

In addition, long-term use of certain medications (such as anti-inflammatories, for example) can also cause stomach pain in this area. As this plexus is related to digestion, gastric problems can cause various problems at this level, such as pain, burning, or gastroesophageal reflux. "People who drink a lot of coffee, and soft drinks, or those who eat too fast often feel localized pain in the celiac plexus," adds the specialist.

Projected pain, at the level of the shoulder blades, is also possible. More rarely, there is the pain located at the base of the neck, shoulders, or even arms. It is sometimes difficult to relieve and understand the exact origin of these pains since stress often intervenes, thus promoting a vicious circle of pain and fatigue. "The therapeutic solution is then to break this loop by working in a personalized way with each patient according to his symptomatology, his lifestyle, and his personal history to relieve the pain," advises the osteopath.

Personalized care

However, intervening directly in this area, especially if it is tense or painful, is not always advisable. "It is possible to act directly on the plexus, but it is not always the most effective approach to relieve tension. It is sometimes more useful to work first on other areas such as the pelvis, diaphragm, or even the head or neck," explains the therapist. If the area is sensitive, the approach should be gentle and delicate. Indeed, the treatment can temporarily generate excitement in the sympathetic system or, conversely, a vagal reflex that can result in a nauseating state, a feeling of coldness, and fatigue ... This goes against the desired role. In all cases, both the practitioner and the patient must remain attentive to their feelings in order to best guide the therapeutic approach to pain.

Taking care of the solar plexus on a daily basis

Pamper your solar plexus, and goes through a daily routine:

  • On a daily basis, taking care of your celiac plexus involves adopting a healthy lifestyle: chewing food slowly, reducing your consumption of stimulants, and acidic but also sweet foods, avoiding snacking, and staying hydrated;
  • It is also very important to take the time to walk and ensure that sleep is restorative;
  • In case of tension or pain in this area, self-massage can help, provided that the touch is soft and adapted. "It is better to avoid pressing directly on the plexus, with your fingertips," advises Youri Bertucchi;
  • Finally, since this plexus is close to the diaphragm, adapted breathing exercises can help relax this area. Do not hesitate to consult a health professional.

Intermittent fasting: principles, cost, advantages and disadvantages

November 04, 2022 0 Comments

By depriving your body of food for several hours, intermittent fasting aims to purify your body and lighten it by a few pounds. What are the benefits? Are there any health risks? How to get started? Raphaël Gruman, nutritionist, explains.

What is intermittent fasting?

For millennia, for spiritual or religious reasons, men have deprived themselves of food for atoning purposes. Today, this practice, which has become fashionable, is done with a concern for well-being and health. "The purpose of intermittent fasting is to purify your body of junk food, its excesses, and the toxins generated by pausing the emunctorial organs, which are the liver, kidneys, and skin," explains Raphaël Gruman, nutritionist.

The principle is to deprive yourself of food for 12 to 16 hours maximum, which is like skipping a meal. "During this fast, the body uses glucose circulating in the blood or liver to continue to function well," says Raphaël Gruman. If it extends beyond 3 days, it comes to draw from the reserves of lipids and proteins, mainly the muscles. The key is a renewal of the body, but also weight loss and a way to fight against certain diseases.

How does it work?

Also called 'fasting' in English, the principle of intermittent fasting is to stop eating for 12 to 16 hours straight. "For example, we have dinner, but we skip breakfast the next morning, to eat again only at lunch, says our expert. But it is up to everyone to adapt it according to their convenience. Thus, if you have intense activity during the day or breakfast is your favorite meal, you can perfectly deprive yourself of dinner. Fasting is then organized as follows: breakfast, lunch, and snack. Food intake stops around 5 p.m., only to resume around 7-8 a.m. The next morning. If solid food is removed, it is important to maintain good hydration, i.e. The consumption of 1.5 to 2 liters of liquid (water, tea, herbal tea, broth ...).

How long does it last?

There is no strict duration. "As part of weight loss, I recommend to my patients an intermittent fasting of a full week," says Raphaël Gruman. On the other hand, if it is in view of digestive well-being, a fast of one to two days a week is more than enough.

Who is it for?

Only to healthy adults. This eating habit is also not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women, children, and adolescents because it could lead to stunted growth, and for the elderly that it can weaken even more.

What foods are allowed?

On the meals of the day not fasted, all foods are allowed: cereals and legumes, meat, fish and eggs, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, and even pastries and confectionery.

On the other hand, on the fasted meal, only water, broths, and herbal teas are allowed.

What foods are prohibited?

On the two or three main meals, if intermittent fasting aims at weight loss, sweets, pastries, confectionery ... Are to be avoided.

During the fast meal, solid feeding is prohibited. "Coffee is also not recommended because it requires digestion work in the liver," says Raphaël Gruman.

Is intermittent fasting easy to follow?

Yes, if it is done in a short phase. When hunger is felt, it can be compensated by the absorption of liquid: by filling the stomach, they cut the urge to eat. Keeping your mind busy also allows you to turn away from your hunger.

Finally, by going to bed early, fasting for the evening meal is easier. "In addition, without receiving food, the body adapts: it transforms fat reserves into ketone bodies, substances that replace glucose," explains our expert. The latter brings a certain satiety, makes it euphoric, and no longer encourages the body to demand food.

What are the health benefits?

By relieving the body of toxins that clutter it, intermittent fasting makes it possible to correct states of fatigue: sleep improves from the 1st day and tone returns after the 3rd. The complexion also clarifies and the skin is healthier. "It allows a weight loss of the order of 1 kg per week, as part of a fast followed over a full week," says the nutritionist.

Fasting would also reduce pain, stiffness, and NSAID consumption in people with rheumatoid arthritis1. This eating method would also improve concentration, according to a study published in the International Journal of Obesity2 by promoting the renewal of neurons in the brain.

Is it dangerous for health?

Performed for too long and without medical supervision, fasting could cause deleterious effects on the body. In the first place, dizziness and headaches. If it continues, it can cause muscle wasting and deficiencies in macronutrients including protein, as well as minerals, such as iron, and cause anemia.

It can also be harmful to the heart: some heart problems, especially arrhythmias are a contraindication to overly restrictive diets. This risk exists, especially when the restriction lasts too long because it weakens the heart muscle, according to the High Authority of Health3. Consult your doctor and cardiologist before you start.

What are the effects in the case of cancer?

On the anti-cancer effects, opinions are still divided. Many animal studies have already shown that starvation before chemotherapy can preserve healthy cells while making cancer cells more vulnerable to treatment. In 2017, the Inca looked into the issue and issued an opinion that "the overall analysis of available scientific knowledge, in particular clinical knowledge, does not allow to conclude on the interest of these regimes in cancer prevention or during treatments. In cancer patients, the loss of weight and muscle mass observed in clinical studies suggests a risk of worsening undernutrition and sarcopenia, two pejorative prognostic factors recognized during treatments.

But a study published in June 2020 in the famous journal Nature revives the debate5: carried out on 129 breast cancer patients, it shows that those who had been deprived of food for three days before and three days after their chemotherapy session had responded better to this treatment than those who had continued to eat normally.

"Fasting can be an ally in the fight against cancer," says Raphaël Gruman. However, because this disease and its treatments can also lead to malnutrition causing a deterioration in the general condition, if the patient wishes to follow it, he must imperatively be supervised by a health professional.

Benefits of intermittent fasting

  • If it is followed over a long time because food intake is spread over two or even three meals, this eating pattern is not unbalanced and does not cause deficiencies or fatigue;
  •  It is a health ally: it improves the digestive system, sleep, and skin quality, brings a boost of tone, relieves pain in case of rheumatoid arthritis, and ensures the proper functioning of the brain;
  • It allows you to lose weight, about 1Kg per week;
  • It is compatible with special diets such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free, salt-free, kosher and halal;
  •  It may be short-lived.

Disadvantages of intermittent fasting

If fasting lasts too long and is not supervised, it can lead to significant deficiencies, muscle wasting, and recovery of lost weight. The High Authority of Health recommends not losing more than 1 to 2 kilos per month3;
It may be responsible for eating disorders, compulsions for sweetness;
This eating mode can be de-socializing: skipping dinner, for example, limits outings with the entourage.
The opinion of our expert committee

Aurélie Guerri, dietician nutritionist

'Intermittent fasting has many health benefits (cleansing the body, preventing certain diseases, reconnecting to feelings of hunger, energy gain...) but it is not suitable for everyone. This is why it is necessary to seek the advice of a doctor or health professional to be able to practice intermittent fasting. It is effective and safe when fasting remains occasional and meals, outside the fasting period, are balanced.'

Pr Antoine Avignon, diabetologist nutritionist

"Definitely one of the diets with the most scientific data demonstrating long-term beneficial effects and anti-aging effects. Studies show very favourable effects on cardiovascular risk factors.'

Interest Rates Are Rising Further: Understanding the Impact on Your Finances and Savings in Canada

November 04, 2022 0 Comments

The current economic environment of inflation and rising interest rates in Canada affects us all directly. That's why it's important to understand the role interest rates play and the impact they have on our daily lives.

Interest rates in 2022

In 2022, the Bank of Canada's key interest rate rose from 0.25% at the beginning of the year and has steadily increased to 3.25% as of September 7, 2022. On October 6, Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem announced that it would be necessary to raise interest rates again in order to fight inflation.

At first glance, our portfolio may not appreciate a rise in interest rates. But it allows, for example, to control inflation and prevent house prices from rising too much. The same goes for essential goods. With inflation reaching 8% last June, raising the key interest rate becomes crucial.

How are interest rates determined?

Interest rates are definitely not set randomly. The Bank of Canada dictates the policy rate, and the policy rate has a direct influence on whether the major banks raise or falling interest rates.

There are eight predefined dates on which the policy rate can be changed, although it is also possible to change it outside of these dates. To give you an idea, in 2022 these pre-established dates were January 26, March 2, April 13, June 1, July 13, September 7, October 26, and December 7.

This policy rate is itself influenced by various factors: the rate of inflation, the money supply, the duration of borrowings, and monetary policy. Generally speaking, the Bank of Canada changes the policy rate in order to stimulate the economy, or rather to slow it down if there is too much inflation. Second, financial institutions rely on this rate to lend funds in the financial markets.

Lowering the policy rate encourages people to borrow more and thus spend more to keep the economy moving. In the opposite context where there is high demand and high inflation, an increase in the policy rate makes borrowing more expensive and thus encourages people to save. The change in interest rates is therefore directly related to the supply and demand of the current economy.

The impact of interest rates

In concrete terms, changes in interest rates have direct consequences, positive or negative, on investments, debt, stock markets (stocks), bonds, and margin accounts.

An increase in the interest rate could therefore increase the rates of your savings account or your guaranteed investment certificate (GIC) for example, but also that of your mortgage payments. These same effects can be observed on any other loan; Lines of credit, student loans, and auto loans are affected.

Mortgage interest rate

The real estate market in recent times illustrates the effect of changing interest rates. Demand has been very strong during the pandemic and as a result, prices have risen quickly. Rising interest rates are helping to control this meteoric rise in prices by slowing demand, as buying a high-priced home with a high-rate mortgage simply becomes unaffordable.

If you're considering buying a home, you may be wondering if you should take a fixed or variable mortgage rate. There is no right or wrong answer to this question; Each person and each file is unique.

The main thing is to have a medium- and long-term vision when making decisions. Current rates can cause a lot of stress, but it's best to look at the big picture. In addition, there are ways to protect against rising interest rates, but these come with special conditions. It is important to discuss this with your financial planner and mortgage broker.

Credit cards

The good news about all these changes is that when we talk about credit card interest rates, they change much less quickly. And in the credit card market, there is no shortage of variety. Obviously, the goal is always to avoid as much as possible having to pay interest on your credit card balances since these fees increase very quickly.

If this is not an option for you right now, fortunately, there are low-interest credit cards on the market, as well as the balance transfer trick to reduce the interest costs to be paid.

While we can't control interest rate hikes or decreases, it's easier to make informed decisions when we know the impact on our personal finances. When it comes to important financial decisions, it is of course recommended consulting an expert to choose what best suits your personal situation, in the current economic context.
