When it comes to health, weight is a parameter to be taken into account. Indeed, it is important to avoid excess weight to benefit from good health. Being too skinny is also not recommended. The Body Mass Index or BMI is a practical measurement tool, used to determine the corpulence of an individual. However, its calculation is carried out in the same way for a man or for a woman. What is a health weight for a man? How to determine the ideal weight for a man? Let us take stock of the issue.
Calculate BMI
BMI is a practical tool used to assess excess weight (or extreme thinness) in an adult individual, aged between 18 and 65 years. It makes it possible to determine the health risks related to corpulence. Indeed, overweight and obesity are risk factors for contracting certain diseases (diabetes, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, for example). Extreme thinness is also harmful to health. The body is exposed to risks of deficiencies related to possible undernutrition.
BMI is calculated by dividing weight, expressed in kilograms, by the square of height, expressed in meters. BMI is therefore expressed in kg/m².
According to the World Health Organization, if your BMI is:
- 16 kg/m², you are too thin (excessive thinness)
- between 18.5 kg/m² and 25 kg/m², your weight is normal
- 25 kg/m², you are overweight
- 30 kg/m², you are obese
The ideal weight for a man, according to BMI
BMI serves as a framework for delineating a range of weights to be achieved. If a man is 1.80 m long, his weight should be between 59.64 kg and 81 kg.
However, this result should be considered with caution. Indeed, although BMI is the only index recognized by the WHO, it does not take into account several factors, such as fat mass, morphology, bones, body water mass.
A man may have different morphology, depending on his size and musculature. In the case of a man weighing 90 kg and measuring 1.85 m, there is a BMI equal to 26.3 which corresponds to a slight overweight. However, this size can correspond to that of an athlete who has a slender figure.
On the other hand, a small man may be overweight, despite a BMI within the limits of normal. This is the case for a man who is 1.65 m long and weighs about 70.78 kg. Its BMI is 26 kg/m². BMI is therefore not always significant to assess the ideal weight in a man.
Determining Healthy Weight with Lorentz Formula
Faced with the limitations related to the calculation of BMI, which is used to assess the corpulence of an individual, regardless of gender, other tools have been established by scientists. Lorentz's formula is one such tool. Valid for an adult aged 18 to 65, it is not suitable for pregnant women or athletes.
Lorentz's formula is as follows: the ideal weight of a man corresponds to his height from which 100 is subtracted. Result from which the formula (size-150)/4 is subtracted, i.e., if P corresponds to the ideal weight in kilograms and T corresponds to the height in cm P = T - 100 - ((T-150)/4)
Let us illustrate this calculation with a concrete example. For an individual whose height is 1.80 m, or 180 cm, Lorentz's formula establishes the following ideal male weight: 180 -100 - ((180-150): 4) = 80 - (30: 4) = 80-7.5, a weight equivalent to 72.5 kg. This weight is a limit weight not to be exceeded to maintain good health. Just like BMI, Lorentz's formula does not take into account the fat mass, waist circumference or muscle mass of the individual. It remains an indicative tool, little used.
The ideal weight of a man: the interest of consulting a health professional
If the tools make it possible to establish a normative framework, in terms of health, it is important to remember that the ideal weight for a man or for a woman depends on specific physiological and psychological factors. Indeed, depending on morphology, body image and self-esteem, the balanced weight is a weight in which we feel good.
In order to check if you have reached or exceeded your ideal weight, do not hesitate to consult your doctor who will establish a health check, according to your clinical parameters, in particular, weight and height. The doctor will help you set up a weight loss program if you are overweight (nutritionist consultation, dietician, sports coach).
