The Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building, Central Park... When we think of New York, we immediately think of these mythical places anchored in the collective imagination.
But the big apple doesn't just have that to offer. Fortunately!!! There is so much to say and discover in New York. It was not easy, but here are the Top 14 of our favorites in this huge city in the United States
The High Line
The High Line is a park built on a former railway track for a portion of 2.3 km (Lower West Side). The place is ideal for strolling or picnicking. The fact of being in height makes the ride very pleasant..
Eat a burger at the 'Shake shack'
This is for us one of the best burgers in the city. You have to test it to believe it. This burger chain is renowned for the quality of its 100% Angus meat as well as the quality of the products (without additives). The price of a burger varies between $5.50 and $9.50.
Victim of its success, it is often necessary to wait a long time in the queue before tasting the famous burger.
Where can I find it? There are about ten restaurants in New York, we tested the one in Madison Square and Columbus Avenue. More info: https://www.shakeshack.com/
Have a drink at 230 Fifth (rooftop)
Who has never dreamed of sipping a drink on the rooftops of Manhattan? This rooftop, located very close to The Flatiron Building and facing The Empire State Building, overlooks the city thanks to its huge terrace. $ 15 a cocktail, that's the price paid to sit for a few hours admiring the night fall on New York. We really liked the setting, so romantic!
Address: 230 5th Ave, New York
Attend a gospel in Harlem
We were lucky enough to stay a few nights with an American woman in Harlem. On Sunday mornings, just walk through the streets and spot a church. Enter and let yourself be guided by the priest: sensations guaranteed! More than a mass, it's a show. The ceremony lasted 3 hours. We were about ten tourists at the back of the church. People were in a 'trance' listening to the priest. It sings it's alive, it screams 'Amen' at the end of every sentence.
This experience remains a highlight of our trip.Soak your feet in the fountain of the university
In the middle of summer, New York is sweltering, and each corner of water provided a little refreshment to our visit. We really enjoyed sharing the joys of the fountain with the children. Romain almost bathed there!
Have dessert at Marx Brenner's
It's 'the place to be' for chocolate fans! An explosion of flavors! We can't wait to come back to test the card again. The dishes are original, and it was difficult to make a choice.
See a show on Broadway
A must-see that really blew us away: the musical 'Chicago'!
A small tip to have seats at a reduced rate: come a few hours before the show to the central ticket office in Time Square and the seats are sometimes sold up to -50% of the base price. For example, we bought our tickets for $70 instead of $120.
Visit Ground Zero: The World Trade Center Memorial
Instant emotion. A special atmosphere. A heavy silence. The fountains have replaced the twin towers, and the flowing water plunges us into our thoughts. Thousands of names are engraved, and people come to meditate. A tear runs down my face. Welcome to The World Trade Center Memorial.
Dinner at a Mexican restaurant in Brooklyn
Brooklyn is full of restaurants of all kinds, but is particularly famous for its Mexican restaurants. We tested the Gran Electrica, 5 Front St, which is located... Just below the bridge! The setting is very nice. We ate in the garden, under the bridge. The dishes are of quality, but the prices are quite high because it is necessary to add the service in addition (ie 10 to 20% more).
Watch the sunset on the Brooklyn side
A great classic that remains one of our favorite places with stunning views of Manhattan and the East River.
Picnic and nap in Central Park
Central Park is no longer presented. The green lung of New York seduced us with its immensity of greenery. We stopped running for a day. We had a picnic with friends and then let ourselves be lulled by the sound of birds and the voices of children. Time stood still for a moment in the city that never sleeps.
Stroll through the large 'Library'
Admission to the library is free. We walked through the rooms filled with old books. This large room has served as a set for many movies so Ghostbusters!
Eating a hot dog on the street
On every street corner, there are itinerant trolleys. Americans are often eating or drinking while walking. This overconsumption shocked us at first... Then we got into the game. For $3, a hot dog, and off you go! It gives us strength to walk in the city! (we reassure ourselves as we can ^^).
Have a drink in the bar that inspired the series 'How I met your mother'
For fans of How I met your mother (like us), McGee's Pub is a must-see. We didn't find that the bar really looked like the one in the series, but the photos on the walls and cocktail names quickly reminded us of it. To test once to taste a Legendary, a Naked Man, or a Marshmallow! (Count $ 10 per cocktail)
Address: 240 W 55th St.
And you what are your favorite places?
